Among the Best in the USA
The Hawaiian beaches are among the Best of the
Nation. Hawaii became in 1959 the 50th State of the Union and it is
a booming place where the Tourism Industry plays an important role. Hawaii
offers a tropical weather all year round and above all its people of
Polynesian, Asian and American descent are always smiling and ready to treat
the visitors like Royalty.
The coastline of Hawaii which means the sum of
all the island’s coastlines is 75 miles or about 1,200 Km mostly surrounded by
cliffs, bays and beautiful beaches. The origin of the islands is volcanic and
from that are the significant variations in the landscape.
I am trying to mention here some of the Best
Hawaiian Beaches. It is not an easy task. The State of Hawaii with its four
islands has been blessed with some of the most beautiful beaches one can find
on this planet.
Mauna Kea Beach on the Big Island Hawaii
- Mauna Kea Beach, Big Island
Mauna Kea is located on the Kohala Coast of the
Big Island Hawaii. This beach is not easy to get to but once you are there your
reward is a spectacular beach not crowded like many others because the resort
hotel nearby limits the number of passes issued to access this beach. It is
shallow and you can wade out and still walk in the waters. This is a great
beach for kids. There are no services on the beach, so bring your own chairs,
water and snacks.
- Hapuna Beach, Big Island
This beach has been voted many times as one of
the “Most Beautiful Beaches of the World”. It is the Island’s longest beach.
There is white sand on the bottom and it extends to form quiet a wide stretch
of beach. It is recommended beach for children due to its shallow waters. But
as in many Hawaiian Beaches you must keep an eye on the waves, because they can
surprise you. The lifeguards usually post markers indicating the condition of
the waves and the water.
Aerial view of Poipu Beach on the Island of Kauai
Best Hawaiian Beaches
- Poipu Beach, Kauai
Poipu Beach on the Garden isle of Kauai is a
sandy beach with clear waters. It is very popular for beach sports like
surfing, swimming and boogie boarding, as well as snorkeling and scuba diving.
It is a safe beach with life guard seven days a
week. It has been named as America’s Best Beach by The Travel Channel and has
always ranked among the ten Best Beaches of the nation.
- Kiahuna Beach, Kauai
This beach is connected to Poipu Beach and it
is just a few minutes’ walk west. As in Poipu the beach is great and very
popular among snorkelers, divers and swimmers. This is known as a great place
for beginner surf lessons. Since there is no parking available here the best
bet is to use the Poipu Beach park and walk.
Kaanapali Beach on the amazing Island of Maui
- Kaanapali Beach, Maui
Kaanapali Beach in Maui, the Valley Isle, is a
water sports paradise. You’ll find here any imaginable ocean recreations.
Snorkeling and Scuba Diving are perfect. It is known by other names like Canoe
Beach, Dig me beach and Keka’a Beach.
This beach is very busy, so if you are looking
for solitude this is not the place. On the other hand if you are looking for
fun, shopping, restaurants, fishing, kayaking and people-watching, this is the
ideal place for you.
There is volcanic Black Rock in the middle
dividing the beach very famous for the terrific snorkeling around it.
- Kapalua Beach, Maui
This beach is suited for groups of families
with small children. Since it is located on a protected crescent shaped bay it
is safe against big surfs. Kapalua Beach is one of Maui’s luxury
communities. It is located about 15
minutes north of Kaanapali Beach.
The surf, if any is quite and the beach is
ideal for families with small children. It is also bordered by coconut palms
providing the necessary shade. It is also near the historic port of Lahaina. I
first heard about Lahaina, more than forty years ago on James Michener’s book “Hawaii”.
This beach is good for snorkeling in the many
coral colonies and tropical fish. The beach resorts offer beach activities
desks offering equipment for snorkeling and many other water sports.

But it is still more famous for its beaches
that are accessible from the hotels by walking a few steps. This beach has seen
during almost a century the faces of many celebrities that have come here to
enjoy the beach and have made it one of the most famous beaches in the world.
Waikiki offers more than beaches, like the
Honolulu Zoo, the Waikiki Aquarium both with lots of entertainment for the
families. Other attractions are nearby Pearl Harbor, Iolani Palace, Hanauma Bay
and Nuuanu Pali lookout.
Lanikai Beach on the Island of Oahu
- Lanikai Beach, Oahu
In the Hawaiian language Lanikai means
“Heavenly Sea”. This is exactly what Lanikai is. The waters are turquoise and
the sands so fine and white that the place is pure heaven. There are always
trade winds appeasing the hot days of Oahu Beaches.
It is located on Oahu’s windward coast and it
is a popular hangout place for locals and visitors alike. It is a safe beach
for swimming and plain sun tanning. During weekdays it is not as crowded as it may
be during weekends and tourist’s seasons.
- Papohaku Beach on
the island of Molokai
This is a three mile
long and 300 feet wide gold sand beach. It is one of the longest of Hawaii’s
beaches. It is a relaxed beach great for walking, picnics, sunset watching.
Except in summer, swimming is a bit risky because of the big surf and riptides.
It offers facilities like showers, restrooms, picnic grounds and parking.
