Clifton Beaches

To get to any of Clifton four beaches, it takes 15 minutes’ drive from downtown Cape Town. Each one attracts a different type of crowd, although the most popular is Clifton 4th beach.

Popular Clifton 4th is the playground of the “Rich and Famous”. You go there to see and be seen and many locals like to take advantage of the long days of summer to spend the whole day and finish the adventure with a seaside picnic. Just a note, it is illegal to drink alcohol on Cape Town beaches.

Of all Cape Town Beaches, this beach is known for the number of the lovely bird, the African Penguins. They are the only ones that breed in this continent. Every year over 60,000 visitors come just to see them in their habitat.

These unique little animals have their habitat all the way from southern Namibia on the west to Port Elizabeth on the east. They have been declared as endangered species.

Penguins viewing have been made easier by boardwalks to allow visitors to watch them without actually interfering with their daily routine.

Muizenberg Beach

This is the ultimate family beach in South Africa. It is a Blue Flag Beach, meaning great marks for safety, recreational facilities and eco-consciousness.

This beach goes back in history. It has been the summer holiday venue for thousands of South Africans for ages. Every December it is visited by many families from the interior to spend their holiday beach vacation on its shores. Many remember the gone days when ice cream sellers filled the beach selling their goodies.

Located on the Indian Ocean, the waters are far more welcoming that the seas of the Atlantic. The beach’s Surfer’s Corner remains the place to experience a relatively gentle introduction to the sport.

This beach offers a row of colorful huts, ideal for refuge from the hot sun of strong winds.

Camps Bay

Just down the road from Clifton is the crescent beach of Camp Bay. This palm line strip attracts locals and visitors to play beach volley ball or beach bat or simply walk their dogs. All this with a beautiful view of the amazing peaks of the Twelve Apostles range, part of the famous Table Mountain.

It features many restaurants on the road, as well as cafes or fashionable bars, where nice people go for a drink of seafood eating.

Llandudno Beach

Located on the way to Hout Bay, about 20 km south of Cape Town, it is favorite among locals. You reach this beach through a narrow road through an expensive neighborhood bringing you to this soft sandy cove.

Here you’ll find children building sand castles, groups of friend playing beach sports, surfers and for dog lovers, many dogs wagging their tails on this spectacular beach.

Since it is located on the Atlantic side, this is a great place to watch the sunset. Please note that there are no restaurants, so bring your own snacks and prepare for a great picnic day.

Lappiesbaai Beach

A long, curvy bay, near Stilbaai, which is very popular over the holiday season. It has been awarded Blue Flag status three years in a row.

Bikini Beach

This intimate Blue Flag beach is located in Gordon's Bay and is known as one of the best beaches around. Swimming is safe here.

Hawston Beach

Located near Hermanus, this is a Blue Flag beach known for its safe swimming and sensitive ecologically sound environment. A must for nature lovers.

This is a Blue Flag Beach that goes on for miles. It is a favorite spot for long beach walks and whale watching.

Bloubergstrand

This beach is a classic where visitors can walk for miles. Windsurfers in particular love this beach when the Cape winds blow. You’ll have great views of Table Mountain.
